    EXT. PARKING LOT

    jamie (V.O.)

    I had another dream...

A pigeon stands on the ground, peacefully enjoying the freedom of living outdoors. His eyes jolt around, paranoid almost. He suddenly flies away.

    jamie(V.O.)

    ...where I was a bird...

JAMIE watches the pigeon take off from his window. He watches the bird in full flight, flying high in the blue sky.

    JAMIE (V.O.)

...I get this dream a lot...

JAMIE leaves the window and walks around his empty room. He begins running around, arms outstretched he is bored and wants to escape.

    JAMIE (V.O.)

...but no matter how hard I try...

JAMIE begins struggling to open his bedroom door but lacks the strength to turn the knob.

    JAMIE (V.O.)

    ...I can never fly.

JAMIE gives up and returns to gazing out the window. The sound of a coo-coo clock goes off, as his door opens a small crack with a bright light shining from the other side.

    INT. GYM HALLWAY

JAMIE and his coach/teacher, MR. PEARLMAN, stands against the wall, listening somewhat attentively to the retelling.

    JAMIE

    That's when I wake up.

    mr. PEARLMAN

    That's quite the fantasy.

    JAMIE

What do you think it means?

The sound of clanging heels approaches. JAMIE'S MOTHER arrives with his track suit in hand.

    mother

    Good morning, professor!

    MR. PEARLMAN

Good morning, Mrs. Arndell. Actually, its just Mr. Pearlman.

    MOTHER

Oh, well, my apologies. And actually, it's miss Arndell.

    MR. PEARLMAN

I see. Well, ready for the race?

    JAMIE

    Yes.

    mother

Oh, Jamie! You can't race in an outfit like that! You got to get dressed first silly!

    MR. PEARLMAN

Your mother's right, you still have to get changed. I'll leave you to it. See you out there.

    MOTHER

We'll be ready in a jiffy! Sorry about my boy, he can be slow sometimes.

    MR. PEARLMAN

Nothing to be sorry about Miss Arndell. Jamie is by far my best student and fastest runner. You should be proud.

MR. PEARLMAN heads down the corridor, while JAMIE and his MOTHER walk toward the changing room. The two adults look back at each other, while JAMIE daydreams.

    ext. track field

JAMIE walks with his mother to the field, passing the bleachers where the bullies sit preying. JAMIE notices them and attempts to avoid them, but the taunting continues.

    eric

Nice outfit Jamie, did your mommy dress you?

    MOTHER

    Actually, I did!

JAMIE tries to imagine himself somewhere else as they near closer to the starting line.

    MOTHER (cont'd)

Friends of yours? Oh look! There's Lucinda!

LUCINDA is stretching her quads. JAMIE stares at her, his jaw nearly dropping, his mouth salivating and his eyes obsessed with her beauty.

MR. PEARLMAN blows his whistle. JAMIE heads out to his spot, located next to LUCINDA'S.

    MR. PEARLMAN

    Runners ready?

    MOTHER slowly approaches the coach.

JAMIE jogs over to his line and looks at LUCINDA. She gives him a quick look back, but he becomes embarrassed and quickly adverts his eyes. LUCINDA hides a smile from him.

    mother

    Hi.

    MR. PEARLMAN

    Hi. On your marks...

All of the runners take a knee, putting their starting leg out.

    MR. PEARLMAN

    Get set...

The knees come up from the ground, waiting for the gun to go.

MR. PEARLMAN raises his arm, gun in the air. He fires and the racers are off.

The bullies begin mocking JAMIE, name calling him. The boo birds come out of hiding.

JAMIE and LUCINDA are tied neck and neck and have a sizable lead over the other runners. LUCINDA stares ahead at the finish line, while JAMIE admires her, lost in her beauty.

JAMIE's concentration upon her is soon broke by his mother screaming. Both HE and LUCINDA look to the sidelines where his MOTHER is galloping to stay with them.

    mother

Almost there! Focus, keep going, go! Run, run faster, almost there!

LUCINDA grins, while JAMIE, feeling embarrassed and feeling the pressure from his MOTHER, picks up speed and soon leaves his love in his dust.

JAMIE crosses the finish line without breaking a sweat and is immediately hugged and congratulated by his overzealous mother. The other runners all finish, LUCINDA in second, sulking in defeat.

    int. mr. pearlman's office

MR.PEARLMAN sits behind his desk while JAMIE and his MOTHER seat comfortably in front.

MOTHER has her legs crossed and her hands on her lap.

JAMIE is sitting up straight and attentively, staring proudly at his mentor.

    MR. PEARLMAN

You had quite the run today, Jamie. I'm really pleased with your athletic ability.

    mother

    As am I!

    MR. PEARLMAN

There aren't a lot of students that can combine academic smarts with such strong athleticism.

    mother

I always remind him that he's special!

    MR. PEARLMAN

He certainly is gifted. I hope you don't mind then if I give your son a present.

    MOTHER

Oh not at all! How sweet of you!

    MR. PEARLMAN

I don't have the reputation for giving such things to students, nor do I want to be known as one who picks favourites, but...

MR. PEARLMAN opens a desk drawer and hands JAMIE a book.

    MR. PEARLMAN

I thought you might like this Jamie.

JAMIE looks at the book titled "Performance Flying".

    MR. PEARLMAN

Consider it a reward for all your hard work.

    JAMIE

Thank you very much Mr. Pearlman!

    mother

Wow Jamie, look at that! A book! Well, what do you say?

JAMIE looks over to his mother.

    JAMIE

    Thank you.

    MOTHER

Don't thank me, turkey! Thank him!

    MR. PEARLMAN

Jamie, I would like to talk to your mother for a few moments. I hope you don't mind if I ask you to wait outside.

    JAMIE

Not at all, I understand. It is meet the teacher week anyways!

MR. PEARLMAN gets up, as does JAMIE and the two shake hands.

    MR. PEARLMAN

I strongly believe that the sky's the limit for you.

    JAMIE

    Thanks again, Mr. Pearlman

MOTHER digs into her purse and pulls out the car keys.

    mother

Here sweetie, you can read in the car.

MR. PEARLMAN sits down and his MOTHER and him wait for JAMIE to leave.

    int. school hallway

JAMIE begins looking at the book with a large smile on his face, a kid who was locked in a candy store grin.

Suddenly, the book is knocked out of his hands as the bullies push past him.

    eric

    Watch where you're going, loser!

ERIC kicks the book. LUCINDA waits for ERIC and then holds onto his arm as they walk away.

JAMIE picks up the book, damaged already he stares down the gang. LUCINDA looks back at him, but then hugs ERIC. JAMIE feels discouraged.

    EXT. CITY PARK

The bullies sit around on the bleachers, staring into the abyss of boredom while LUCINDA is uncomfortably placed in the middle.

    lucinda

Do you guys want to go play?

    eric

    No.

    LUCINDA

Do you want to go study?

The bullies all have a good laugh.

    ERIC

    No.

    LUCINDA

Then what do you want to do?

    eric

    Let's get high!

    other bullies

    Yeah!

    LUCINDA

No way guys, marijuana is bad!

The bullies all pull out joints and begin approaching LUCINDA. She begins to back away, running out of rows.

    ERIC

    C'mon Cindy, it'll be fun!

    OTHER BULLIES

Yeah Cindy, do it. Smoke up.

LUCINDA is at the back row, she's trapped and her friends have become fiends.

    LUCINDA

    No! Someone, please help!

The bullies all chuckle, but suddenly a dark cloud whips by them, a giant bird of some kind.

    ERIC

    What the hell is that?!

    OTHER BULLIES

    Let's get out of here!

The bullies run away in fear while LUCINDA also looks scared until the creature lands next to her. It's JAMIE.

    LUCINDA

    Jamie! That was you?

    JAMIE

    Why yes, it was!

    LUCINDA

    How did you-

    JAMIE

Not to worry, I'm just glad you were able to say no to peer pressure.

    LUCINDA

    My hero!

LUCINDA flings herself onto JAMIE, he smiles and embraces her. There is a moment where the two realize the opportunity for a kiss is evident.

LUCINDA looks into his eyes, as does he into hers. They slowly move in for a kiss, their lips approaching together like snails.

    cut to:

    int. JAMIE's bedroom

Kissy lips approach, ready to place a peck. They land squarely on JAMIE'S lips.

JAMIE wakes up with a big grin on his face and slowly opens his eyes to see to his horror that MOTHER has woken him up with a good morning kiss.

    mother

Rise and shine! Early bird catches the worm!

MOTHER leaves the room humming, while JAMIE brushes off his lips, disgusted by the rude awakening.

    int. lucinda's locker

LUCINDA is at her locker sorting her books and preparing to leave. The door of her locker is covered with butterflies and a mirror. LUCINDA begins playing with her hair and JAMIE approaches her, nervously.

    JAMIE

    Hi. Hello Lucinda.

    LUCINDA

    What do you want?

    JAMIE

    I just wanted to apologize-

    LUCINDA

    For what? That stupid race?

    JAMIE

Well, yes, actually! I just wanted to tell you, uh, no hard feelings-

Suddenly, ERIC sneaks up and hugs LUCINDA. He smells her hair and kisses her on the cheek. She slightly smiles.

    eric

Hey babe, this loser bothering you?

LUCINDA stares at JAMIE. Her expression is both tiresome and bothered but not due to his presence.

    ERIC

The lady has spoken, get lost.

The conversation is interrupted as MR. PEARLMAN calls out to them.

    MR. PEARLMAN (o.s.)

    Eric.

ERIC lets go of LUCINDA, assuming he is in trouble and throws up his hands in defence.

    MR. PEARLMAN

Mind if I borrow Lucinda and Jamie for a moment?

ERIC looks at LUCINDA, then at JAMIE before turning back to the teacher.

    ERIC

    Not at all.

    INT. MR. PEARLMAN'S OFFICE

MR. PEARLMAN is seated behind his desk with his face buried in an open folder. LUCINDA is seated in front of him while JAMIE nervously stands with his arms behind his back, leaning toward the door.

LUCINDA looks behind her at JAMIE who adverts his eyes once she turns, pretending to observe something else in the office. She turns back to her teacher.

    MR. PEARLMAN

I've been reviewing your grades, Lucinda, and I'm quite worried.

    LUCINDA looks toward JAMIE.

    MR. PEARLMAN

I've asked Jamie to be here because I understand you are neighbours, which would make him the ideal tutor.

LUCINDA is appalled by the idea...

    LUCINDA

    Tutor?

    ...while JAMIE couldn't be happier.

    jamie

    Me, a tutor?

MR. PEARLMAN is delighted and charmed by their reactions. He grins and closes the folder.

    Int. School HALLWAY/EXTERIOR OF BATHROOM

JAMIE and LUCINDA walk down the hall together.

    LUCINDA

You don't have to do this.

    JAMIE

If I don't, you won't graduate. If I do, you'll pass with flying colours!

    LUCINDA

    Whatever. Come over at eight.

    JAMIE

    Sounds like a plan!

LUCINDA walks away as JAMIE heads toward the washrooms. He notices that the bullies are loitering around outside the door.

ERIC and his buddies follow him inside.

    INT. SCHOOL BATHROOM

ERIC and his bullies walk into the bathroom laughing and whistling, valiant efforts of striking fear into their prey.

JAMIE sits in the lone stall, scared.

    ERIC

    Little bitch...

JAMIE sitting on the stall, nervous, trying to hurry up.

The bullies comb their hair and check themselves out in the mirror. ERIC paces around the bathroom

    ERIC

    ...you stupid, little bitch.

ERIC and his two buddies withdraw some paper towels, crush them with their hands, and wet them under the sink.

    ERIC

Where could she be? I think little bad girl Jamie's playing hard to get!

They loom over the stall, hiding the wet balls. They look down at JAMIE, who looks up at them, terrified.

    Bully 1

    Haha your a bitch!

    Bully 2

Eat the wet balls you bitch!

The bullies begin chucking the balls at JAMIE

JAMIE gets up and pulls up his pants as he runs out the stall.

ERIC is waiting for him outside of it and grabs his shirt and tears it a little. He pushes JAMIE against the wall. The other bullies walk over laughing.

    JAMIE

    What do you want?

    ERIC

I see how you look at Lucinda. You talk to her again, and you're dead.

ERIC stares JAMIE down, raises his fist, his victim flinches. The bullies laugh and walk away.

JAMIE leans against the wall as his enemies exit, he slumps down in distress.

    BULLY 1

    Enjoy your shit, asshole.

    ext. the neighbourhood

JAMIE leaves school early, walking home. The townhouses around him as well as the streets are empty. He walks in silence to his house.

    INT. JAMIE'S LIVING ROOM

JAMIE eats dinner with his MOTHER. He flips through the book MR. PEARLMAN gave him while eating.

    mother

Jamie put that away. We all know chickens can't fly.

    int. lucinda's room

JAMIE and LUCINDA sit together at her desk. The computer is off, but there are other distractions in the room such as posters and clothes lying around.

LUCINDA holds a pen with a feather on it, along with a notepad in the shape of a heart. She plays with the feather, brushing it against her lips.

A textbook is flipped open. JAMIE searches through the pages, while LUCINDA looks at him, observing his study methods.

JAMIE finds the page and puts a crease in the book. He gets to business but is nervous to even look at her.

    JAMIE

    Alright, let's begin.

    LUCINDA

Have you always gotten straight "A"s?

    JAMIE

    Uh, once I got a "A-".

    LUCINDA

    And what happened?

    JAMIE

    I got grounded.

JAMIE looks at LUCINDA who laughs. JAMIE regains focus on the homework.

    JAMIE

OK, so Darwin believed in evolution-

    LUCINDA

    I got a question.

    JAMIE

    Certainly!

    LUCINDA

What do you do for fun?

    JAMIE

    Excuse me?

    LUCINDA

I mean, what do you do other than the norm?

    JAMIE

Uh, I play chess, read books-

    LUCINDA

    You ever got drunk?

    JAMIE

Uh, no. I'm not interested in those things.

    LUCINDA

Lame. I thought you were fly.

    JAMIE

    Alright, so Darwin-

    JAMIE realizes what she said.

    JAMIE

    Say that again?

    LUCINDA

I thought you were fly, you know, "cool". I figured the reason we never hung out was because you always had some plans.

    JAMIE

My plan is to pass high school and gain the highest level of education.

    LUCINDA

Please! That's our parents' dreams for us, what do you want to do with your life? Have you ever been to a party?

    JAMIE

    No.

    LUCINDA

You haven't lived until you've been hung over.

JAMIE goes quiet and looks at the book. He searches for something to say and as he is about to speak, LUCINDA cuts him off.

    LUCINDA

You want to come out tonight?

    JAMIE

    I don't know if that's such a good idea...

    cut to:

    EXT. OUTSIDE PARTY HOUSE

Loud music is blaring and JAMIE looks worried, uncertain of what is in store for him inside.

    JAMIE

On second thought, I really dunno if this is such a good idea.

LUCINDA has a cigarette in her mouth. She cracks a smile.

    JAMIe

Are you sure Eric invited me?

LUCINDA lights her smoke and exhales in JAMIE'S face. He wipes it away, coughing.

    lucinda

I wouldn't worry about it. You came here with me. Just remember to do my homework, OK?

    jamiE

    Sure.

She takes another haul and then tosses the rest of the tobacco. She approaches JAMIE, he backs away unknowing how to react.

    LUCINDA

    You're sweet.

She then kisses JAMIE on the cheek, his face lights up like fireworks on the 4th of July. Suddenly bursting with confidence, he is walking on air.

    int. house party

The party is loud and booming, packed with students from the school and a few older, shady characters.

People crowd around the door and the loud, blaring music subdues into light jazz as JAMIE brushes through the crowd, very happy and no longer confined. He is trying his best to "be fly".

JAMIE points and smiles at the familiar faces he sees, and those he doesn't recognize he begins to buddy up with. Although JAMIE gives off a warm, friendly vibe the rest of the party people aren't so greeting to his presence and stare at him strangely.

JAMIE makes his way down the hall and turns to a room where people are dancing and notices LUCINDA talking with ERIC. She's whispering into his ear, ERIC grows angrier by the second. JAMIE waves to LUCINDA and she buries her head in shame while ERIC slams his beer and begins advancing in an attacking stance toward a confused JAMIE.

ERIC grabs JAMIE by the collar. The jazz music ends. ERIC pushes JAMIE back.

    ERIC

    Outside. Now, mother fucker!

ERIC'S crew comes behind him and JAMIE, terrified, backs away in fear.

    EXT. OUTSIDE PARTY HOUSE

ERIC continues to push JAMIE as a crowd follows the fight outdoors to a park. ERIC picks JAMIE up and slams him on the ground.

    ERIC

    Nowhere to run now, loser!

ERIC has JAMIE begging for freedom. JAMIE would like nothing more than to run away, however, he is completely encircled by people cheering on the bashing.

    eric

You sorry sack of shit! You think you can come to my party? Who invited you nerd?

ERIC kicks JAMIE again. The crowd cheers, enjoying the display of aggression. JAMIE begins to feel the pressure and is slowly beginning to crack.

    BULLY 1

    Finish him off, dude!

ERIC pushes JAMIE to the ground and puts his knee on his back and lowers himself so that he can whisper and hit JAMIE in the kidneys. JAMIE struggles to keep himself up off the ground.

JAMIE closes his eyes, imagining he is somewhere else.

    cut to:

    int. dining room

A low-lit candle light dinner is shared between JAMIE and LUCINDA. She looks lovely, he looks marvellous. They hold hands and look into each others eyes, obsessed with admiring the other.

    LUCINDA

Darling! I'm so glad we stayed in tonight! This is absolutely beautiful!

    JAMIE

Not as beautiful as you my love.

    LUCINDA

Oh dear, you know I love you too.

    JAMIE

    Prove it to me.

LUCINDA takes her hands away and slightly rises from the table. Her eyes light up from the flame.

    LUCINDA

No. You prove it to me. Fight for me, fight back.

    bully 2 (v.o.)

    Fuck him up!

    EXT. OUTSIDE PARTY HOUSE

JAMIE keeps his eyes closed, the frustration and anger inside of him climbing, he struggles to contain his emotions.

    LUCINDA (O.S.)

    C'mon Jamie.

JAMIE opens his eyes. LUCINDA stands over him smoking. Her eyes light up just as in the dream. The crowd is louder than her, but JAMIE can hear what she's saying.

    LUCINDA

    Fight back!

JAMIE suddenly cries out in rage, lifting himself off the ground. He elbows ERIC in the face, and the crowd is stunned and turns silent.

ERIC recoils in pain, crying. JAMIE continues to strike, hitting his enemy with full force. The people are all silent and watch the turn of events unwilling to stop the fists from flying.

    ERIC

Please, no more! Please, just stop!

JAMIE gives him a few more shots, then gets up. He is still enraged and begins to walk away. The crowd creates him a path, and before he steps through and leaves, he takes LUCINDA'S cigarette and beer, stares her dead in the face and marches off into the night.

The crowd turn their attention back to ERIC, however, LUCINDA looks down the street to JAMIE, walking alone down a dark and lonely road.

    INT. outside school

JAMIE and BULLIES 1 & 2 stand underneath the bleachers, smoking and drinking during school. They laugh and are loud, but no one notices them.

LUCINDA watches them from afar, wearing glasses and having her schoolbooks at hand. She decides to approach the situation.

    LUCINDA

Excuse me Jamie, can I have a word?

JAMIE hands her some of the joint, she backs away and shakes her head. He hands it off to the bullies and then shoos them away.

    JAMIE

Alright boys, holla at you later. Stay fly!

    BULLY 1

Alright, let's leave the two love birds alone.

    BULLY 2

    Cool bro, peace out.

The new BFFs props each other, then the extra muscle leaves and JAMIE approaches LUCINDA.

    JAMIE

    What up, Lucy-Cindy?

    LUCINDA

Its Lucinda. I guess you're not tutoring me tonight?

    JAMIE

I don't see why you need me, you're doing fine on your own.

    LUCINDA

And what about you, Jamie? A "B-" on the last quiz? That's not like you.

    JAMIE

Fuck, you sound just like my mother.

    LUCINDA

Swearing, that's not like you either.

    JAMIE

Jesus, I'm beginning to believe you gave birth to me!

    LUCINDA

You know, just because you win one fight, it doesn't mean you win them all.

    JAMIE

And just because I help you pass one exam, doesn't mean I'll help you for them all.

LUCINDA stares at him coldly. JAMIE puts on his sunglasses and pops his collar. He dresses and walks just like the very thing he once despised.

    JAMIe (cont'd)

    I'll see you around.

He struts off as LUCINDA shakes her head and opens her textbook, reading about "human errectus".

    INT. LUCINDA'S ROOM

The room is much tidier. Cleaned up and clothes put away, LUCINDA'S room is neat and a perfect environment for studying.

LUCINDA works diligently behind her desk, highlighting phrases in her textbook and copying them to her notes.

    cut to:

    INT. JAMIE'S basement

JAMIE hangs out with BULLIES 1 and 2 in the basement, drinking big bottles of beer and constantly smoking.

They either have a drink touching their mouth or taking a drag off their cigarette.

    cut to:

    INT. mr. pearlman's classroom

MR. PEARLMAN walks down the rows handing back tests. LUCINDA shows her mark to JAMIE which is of an "A+" while JAMIE gets handed a "C+".

    cut to:

    INT. LUCINDA'S ROOM

LUCINDA continues to study hard. Writing profoundly and diving deeper into the chapters of her textbook.

    cut to:

    EXT. CITY PARK

JAMIE and the Bullies are drinking in the park, being loud and obnoxious. JAMIE is swooped up onto the shoulders on BULLY 1.

JAMIE screams excitedly while the others laugh in their drunk adventure.

JAMIE stretches out his arms, throws away his beer and begins flapping as if in flight.

    JAMIE

    I'm flying! I'm flying!

Bully 1 drops JAMIE, who crashes to the ground with a loud thud as the bullies laugh and high five each other, walking away.

Paranoid, JAMIE feels he sees them plotting against him. He sits in the snowbank worried.

    cut to:

    INT. MR. PEARLMAN'S CLASSROOM

LUCINDA shows JAMIE her newest grade while a hung over JAMIE holds his head and tries to to wrap his head around getting an "F".

    cut to:

    INT. LUCINDA'S ROOM

The textbook is slammed shut. LUCINDA and JAMIE are in opposite places sitting at the desk.

LUCINDA is sitting straight, focused and ready to teach while JAMIE is slouching and holding his head up and in no condition to learn.

    LUCINDA

    Have you learned anything?

    JAMIE

    Not really.

    LUCINDA

I didn't expect you to. You hardly looked at the book.

JAMIE looks at her, she has changed so much from her rebel days.

He is reminded of her and thinks back to know what he has become in order to get to know her more and in a sense, he has lost himself.

    He sheds a tear.

    JAMIE

I'm sorry, Lucinda, I really am.

    LUCINDA

    Why are you crying?

    JAMIE

I've messed up, I've messed up bad. All I ever wanted to do was talk to you, and hang out with you. I wanted to get to know you and now I don't even think I know myself anymore...

    LUCINDA

Hey, don't be sad! You did get to know me, you've helped me find out who I am. I wasn't who I wanted to be, but what I wanted to become.

    JAMIE

    What do you mean?

    LUCINDA

I guess I wanted to be different. I wanted to feel special. You know?

    The tears stop.

    JAMIE

    Yes.

    LUCINDA

I realized how selfish and stuck up I was to you and to other people who weren't accepted but picked on for not following the code.

    JAMIE

Yes, I know what you mean.

    LUCINDA

After you first tutored me, I realized that I was throwing my future away by staying with Eric. That night at the party, I was breaking up with him.

    JAMIE

    Why?

    LUCINDA

He was an idea I liked, but not a person I could love. After reading a lot, I realized that judging books by their covers has the same effect when it comes to people.

JAMIE slowly leans in. LUCINDA follows.

    LUCINDA

You've shown me who I really am Jamie, I don't want you pretending anymore. I-

    JAMIE

    I love you.

JAMIE grabs LUCINDA and kisses her hard on the lips. She kisses him back, the two love birds finally pecking away at each other.

The two end their kiss looking at each other smiling brightly.

    JAMIE

    You know-

    LUCINDA

    Yes Jamie?

    JAMIE

We should really get back to studying.

LUCINDA laughs and kisses him again. She pulls away.

    LUCINDA

You're right! You study chapters eight to twelve, and I'll make notes on the rest.

    JAMIE

You're one hell of a chick.

LUCINDA blushes and hands JAMIE his copy of the course material.

    LUCINDA

Let's try passing Mr. Pearlman's exam first, Romeo.

JAMIE opens his book where a drawing of two birds in their nest cuddle each other. He looks at his doodle, then at LUCINDA who smiles back.

JAMIE begins writing a caption below.

    EXT. OUTSIDE JAMIE'S HOUSE

JAMIE slowly approaches from outside carrying his schoolbooks feeling happy.

Suddenly, ERIC and the bullies surround him and knock his books out of his hands.

    eric

Hey there little bitch, forget about me?

JAMIE tries to run inside, but BULLY 2 grabs him as BULLY 1 begins tearing up his books. ERIC delivers vengeful shots to  JAMIE'S stomach and face.

The bullies drop him and walk away. JAMIE is beaten and winded and lies on his front yard in pain.

    ERIC

    See you tomorrow!

The bullies laugh and run away, while JAMIE picks himself up and enters his house.

    cut to:

    INT. HALE'S LIVING ROOM

JAMIE opens the front door to see his MOTHER and MR. PEARLMAN fondling each other on the couch. They stop and shoot up from each other as if nothing was happening. MOTHER adjusts her strap, while they look at JAMIE awkwardly.

The television is playing cartoons of Tweety Bird and Sylvester the Cat. JAMIE looks at the TV, then at each of the adults and runs up to his room and slams the door.

INT. JAMIE'S BEDROOM - DREAM SEQUENCE

JAMIE is sitting in his room in front of his chess board playing by himself.

He is moving his pieces in attacking his imaginary opponent: himself.

    IMAGINARY JAMIE

Feeling a little down, Jamie? Don't beat yourself up about it.

JAMIE'S IMAGINATION makes a move that takes out his queen.

    IMAGINARY JAMIE

You should, because after all you did, nothing has changed. You're the same, except you've gone and ruined everything.

JAMIE then makes a move that takes him nowhere.

    IMAGINARY JAMIE

The problem with you is that nobody likes you. You've got nothing more to give anybody, so why are you still here?

The imagination gets his chess piece in the right place, traps real JAMIE.

    IMAGINARY jamie

You should just disappear. Fly away Jamie, fly high into the clouds, fly far away so that no one has to see you again. You'll be free, free from all of this...Fly Jamie...fly...

JAMIE looks up tearful and depressed. He throws his chess board away.

    JAMIE

    Leave me alone!

JAMIE screams, but his voice is directed at a picture frame of an owl that stares back at him.

    INT. JAMIE'S BEDROOM

JAMIE wakes up from the nightmare. His room is dark and the only light appears from outside his window.

He stares out to the early morning sky and wonders.

    EXT. OUTSIDE JAMIE'S HOUSE

LUCINDA walks outside her house, heading across the street to JAMIE'S place to continue their romance. She spots papers lying around the front yard and investigates.

She picks up a torn page. It's one of JAMIE'S drawings, below a caption reads, "SHE BELIEVES IN ME". She looks at the other papers, all with different drawings of birds, all with the same four words.

She rings the doorbell. The rooms are empty as the bell rings through the house.

    JAMIE'S MOTHER answers.

    LUCINDA

    Hi! Is Jamie ready?

    MOTHER nods her head.

    MOTHER

    He's in his room.

    She lets LUCINDA in.

    INT. JAMIE'S BEDROOM

LUCINDA walks through the house, up the stairs to JAMIE'S room. She sees him sitting at an open window staring outside.

    LUCINDA

    Jamie!

    JAMIE

    I thought I could change.

    LUCINDA

Jamie, what are you talking about?

JAMIE looks out the window. He sticks a leg out the window.

    JAMIE

    Don't come any closer.

    LUCINDA

    What are you doing?

JAMIE looks at her, then looks at his book, "Performance Flying".

    LUCINDA

    Jamie, you're scaring me.

    JAMIE

I can fly, Lucinda, I can. You have to believe in me. You have to believe I can do it.

    LUCINDA

I believe in you, I do. Get down from there and we-

    JAMIE

That's just it Lucinda, you don't. I wanted you to, but you don't. Nobody does, nobody ever will...

JAMIE looks out the window again, vertigo beginning to take effect.

    LUCINDA

Jamie, please. Don't do it. This is crazy!

    jamie

I thought I could change, but I can't. I'm back to being grounded, back to being tarred and feathered.

    LUCINDA

You have changed, Jamie, I have too. Its part of growing up.

    JAMIE

That's just it-I don't want to grow up. I want to evolve. I want to be free.

    JAMIE jumps out the window.

    LUCINDA

    Jamie!

    JAMIE

    I'm flying!

LUCINDA rushes over to the ledge and screams in horror.

    cut to:

    EXT. CITY PARK

A dead pigeon lays on the ground.

A shovel scoops him up, then transfers the body into a hole where dirt is scraped over and tapped down, buried deep into the soil.

    THE END
